I've already posted, but had to add my largest passion which is U.S. type coinage. Just starting a type set requires you to learn a lot about the history of coinage in the United States. And for me, as I study and learn more my type set just keeps expanding and expanding - I keep adding more minor subtypes, major varieties, branch mint examples, keys/semi-keys, etc. to my list, so my so-called "type set" just keeps growing and growing. I know with my goal being ever-changing I'll never complete this set in my lifetime, but I'm perfectly OK with that - it keeps the hunt always exciting, entertaining and challenging!

I agree the voyager dollars are beautiful and in high grade proof-like look almost iridescent.
It took me a while to care about how many waterlines there were or if the beads are large or small but it's starting to intrigue me now.

The 144 commem set is one I thought about. Maybe once I complete my Morgan's. It's probably tougher than Morgan's isn't it due to the small montages and being a larger set?

Pmint1, as a new member you've posted a VERY interesting topic that is sure to have strong legs, getting many replies.

Like jacrispies and KenKat, my favorite is my Dansco 7070 set, shown in the hotlink of my "Signature" below. It took me many decades to "complete", as it's very challenging. No offense to others, but as a generalization, I would get bored putting together a complete set of all dates and mint marks of a series, although admittedly, the "hunt" would be fun. With a Dansco 7070, I can afford a higher grade of a particular type coin, since I only need one coin, than if I were collecting several/many entire series. This is especially true if I limit myself to common dates, so that coin can look like the designer envisioned it as it came off the press.

With that said, once I finished that set, I did start several sets, but for the most part, kept them short: a Two Cent business strike set, as only 10 coins are needed; and a Classic Silver Commem 50 coin Type Set (not so short). I'm now in the middle of three sets: Proof Franklins (only 14 coins are needed, and I'm missing three), Standing Lib Full Head DATE set -only 14 coins are needed, and I'm missing three (doing the DATE set to avoid the cost of many more coins and the more expensive mint mark coins, etc.), and a Lincoln Wheat cent DATE set - 50 coins are needed, I'm missing 11, but putting it together with only coins graded RD (same rationale for doing a DATE set as with my SLQ set).

Naturally on the Dansco 7070, or any other Type Set, collectors have the freedom to pick the twist they prefer. Some prefer picking tougher dates, some prefer emphasizing a particular branch mint, etc. All are good and exciting!

To everyone, regardless of what you collect, "Happy Hunting". Enjoy this wonderful hobby of ours!

Steve

@Pmint1 - it is a larger set with fairly low mintages, but with a much smaller collector base the prices and availability for most classic commemoratives aren't bad unless you go for examples at the high-end of the grading scale. The tougher ones in all grades are the Lafayette dollar, Grant with star, Hawaiian, Missouri 2x4, Pan-Pac and Spanish Trail. Most of the others are quite reasonably priced in the low-to-mid MS grades (in fact, for series like Booker T. Washington and Washington-Carver, you can get many of those for under $50 in PCGS/NGC MS63/64, and much less than that raw).

I've been working on my PCGS/NGC set for more than 7 years, and the difficulty I've had is finding nice eye-appealing examples in the grades I want - that's not been easy!

I think you guys convinced me I need to start a commem date set. I will give me variety and maybe not cost a fortune. Also the type set is intriguing. So many coins ,so little time.

Pmint1, starting with a commemorative type set is a great idea. It's a good way to test the waters and still build a very nice set (around 50 coins). That was my intent originally, but when I finished that I realized I had all the "tough" ones already, so moving from that to building a complete set just felt like the thing to do (and, I always enjoy the challenge of the hunt!). Good luck! And don't forget the Norse medals - while not true commemoratives, they seem to be a natural fit for the set...

Wow, I posted on this thread two years ago! It would be cool to see how collecting has changed for some. For me, I decided to go balls-out bust halves. Although that would be my first answer, my actual answer is filling a Dansco 7070 with love tokens. The project is in it's infancy, so I don't have many photos to share for now. It is tough to choose only one coin for each slot because every design is unique. It will be very tough to find coins in the earlier draped bust series and the later modern issues such as the bicentennials.
Suffering from bust half fever.

Two years later I've finally submitted some inherited Canadian coins to ANACS for conservation, preservation and attribution to my grandfather (didn't really care what the grades were, but they all got MS). Some coins had been purchased to fill in a couple gaps, but I now have (I think) all the Canadian silver for 1947 Maple Leaf and 1948, as well as 1949, in ANACS slabs. I've always thought the 47 ML were cool, because they were minted in 1948. So essentially I have a complete set of the silver coins minted in 1948.

As mentioned in my original post, I now have 2 coins left to complete all the Barber dime transition varieties. 1899-1905 there are a total of 21 coins where two different design types were minted. I started with the less common ones. The two I have left are the "normal" types for the year, and are easily available, but the 1901-S is expensive. I keep getting outbid... The 1901 proofs also have two reverse types but I'm not sure if I want to include the proofs.

Since discovering that there is a third Barber quarter obverse hub type in 1900, I've half-heartedly started collecting all the combinations for 1900. 3 obverse types and 2 reverses across 3 mints gives 18 possible combinations, but only 15 of those are known to exist. My kids are going to wonder why all the 1900 quarters...

I suppose I should start collecting something "normal."

I'll add my voice to the chorus of those who loved completing the 7070 Type Album best of all. It was the first album I ever worked on and it's the one that allowed me to gain a broad (if not deep) knowledge of American coins. In fact, I loved it so much that it inspired me to try and create my own "U.S. Proof Type Set" and "U.S. Currency Type Set" albums (although the former only exists in digital format)

I'll chime back in after 2 years since my last post; my complete classic commemorative set was completed a good while back (when I posted previously I only had one to go). Now I'm fully into upgrade mode on that set.

While most of my currency acquisitions are for building type sets, one complete currency set I'm now working on is U.S. fractional currency (circulation issues). As with the classic commemoratives, very nice examples of most can be acquired without spending a load of money. However, there are a number of tough ones in the 128-note set, as defined by the PMG registry. I'm only 52 notes in, so this will be a very long term project!

I have a date set (mixture of mints) of Morgan dollars from 1878 - 1904; I then have all three for 1921 but didn't buy the 2021 issue. It was fun building the set and the last two I got were 1893 (first one that showed up was a CC) and 1895 (got an O on ebay). I may start going for mintmarks now.

I don't have all the varieties like the 1970-S small date or the WAMs, but I do have a basic complete date and mintmark set of LMCs, and what's nice is that most of them were from circulation during my various trips to the USA.

Those are the only sets of US coins I have that could be called complete, apart from a date set of SBA dollars and IHC cents without the shield on the reverse!
