Many European auction houses seem to be using "auction platforms" these days (OneBid, biddr, etc). But occasionally I get confused when the pre-bidding and live bidding get separated.

I just participated in an auction where I had placed a pre-bid through the auction house website, because I was unsure whether the live auction would reach my lot before I needed to go to work.
As luck would have it, the live auction proceeded at a quicker pace than expected (over 100 lots/hr), and I was able to participate in the live auction on the lot of interest. But I never saw an indication that I was "winning" despite the bidding proceeding below the level of my pre-bid. So I think I placed one bid before the auction ended, still below what I thought was my pre-bid (I can no longer view that pre-bid on the auction house website).

So ... possibly I was bidding against my own pre-bid?

Yeah, that stinks if they allowed you to bid against yourself. The bidding process can be pretty opaque at some of those auction sites.

I will send an email to the auction house asking them to check if indeed I bid against myself.

If the stars are aligned correctly, I may have won it at a price lower than my limit, and lower than what the other version of me was willing to bid.

That is rather interesting. I hope you did win, at the lower bid of course.

Alles gut.

I won the lot; and apparently my fingers were not quick enough to bid against myself (once in a while such things work out in our favor . There was one other active bidder who dropped out before my limit.

Will post elsewhere when I receive it.
