Hi guys,

I have this 1987 Lincoln Proof Penny and noticed that there is no "S" mint mark on the Obverse. Can someone please explain why this is?

I thought all proof's had the S Mint Mark stamped on the Obverse?

My other question is, why do proof pennies have different colors? I noticed that some are a deeper red and some others are lighter more yellow tone. Why is this?

Why are you thinking it is a proof? Are you sure of your ID? Do you have proof sets from that era to compare the coin to? I think you will see a difference.

Copper is known for taking on different colors as it tones. Some of the color originates from the alloy or impurities, some of it from the environment, and part of is a function of how long the toning has been able to proceed.

Not a proof, just an early die state business strike.

Not sure this is a proof. It does have proof like rims. When I look closer it looks almost like MM removed

I would expect a lot of damage if the mint mark was removed from a plated cent.

Seeing the strikes side by side and noting the rims will help understand the strikes better. The business strike cents are struck only once, while the proof coins are struck twice. The devices are fresher on these strike and the rims are different from the strikes. Squared versus rounded rims. The squared ones show on the full rim.

If your coin didn't have the stains on it, it might have been a higher grade coin. But with the stains, it would not get that high of a grade.

CoopHome: Memorial Proofs side by side business strike coins in the same die state. Rim are different. Full squared versus rounded rims.
