So I purchased an 1886-O Morgan yesterday and it was in AU-50 for $228 but other 1886-O's going for $500,$700+ were all cleaned looking with rim dents and beat up.But most importantly the breast feathers were all flattened.I know the New Orleans mint is known for having weak strikes and flattened breast feathers.I went with The AU-50 nicest looking bargain for me anyway. The feathers and Fields area looked way better on this one for way less than 1/2 the price. Can a lower grade really look like a better coin than one of higher grade?

What slab is it in? It would have to grade AU55 to justify what you paid for it. Check the link I posted earlier. John1

I think it looks dipped as well. I think ANACS adjusted the grade down to AU50 as a result.

That's starting to make sense because it looks better than AU-50.Wonder why they didn't put"details"on the coin? Maybe I over paid $50 or $70 bucks. These coins sure do go up in price after AU-58.Sky high! I saw some info on them that a lot must have been melted to give the Brits some silver.

Yeah, most of what is available circulated and most mint bags probably did get melted down. This is one issue I've never considered purchasing an MS example... Nowadays overpaid for a Morgan dollar seems like the new normal....Prices seem to have taken a jump.

There are many times a lower grade coin can look better than a higher grade one. Unattractive toning comes to mind.

I often think that Morgan dollars in EF or AU condition look nicer than MS60 - MS63 ones that have lots of lustre but also lots of marks on Liberty's - aka Anna Williams's - cheek.

I've been looking at other examples for sale on-line and most 1886-O's are flat as a pancake when it comes to breast feathers. When the breast feathers are present and somewhat bold the cost is $500,$700 and $1600.00.Thought I more than likely overpaid I can somewhat justify the price because of visible feathers.I"ll be more price conscious in my future purchases.

The coin does look nice and a tad undergrade in the slap that it is.
