Hi! Would love to get your thoughts on what's going on here with the "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the "L" in LIBERTY. I want to say it's perhaps die abrasion from over polishing or maybe a localized die subsidence? Or maybe just some weird wear that happened post mint? The reverse photo is a bit dark (apologies), but all the devices seem normal there. Appreciate any input and thank you!

Keep in mind that when they polish the dies, the fields are affected. The more that a die field is reduced, the devices are made thinner as they are tapered on the die. (If they were not tapered, the coins would be stuck into the die after each strike.)

So the first clue is that the devices will be shorter in height and they will be smaller in size. On a Struck Through Grease the opposite happens. They will be shorter, but the width will be wider because the fill blocks out the tapered part of the die, and only the wider base/none will show.

CoopHome: Why do some devices look wider and other times they look smaller than normal?
