Hey, y'all.

I recently purchased a Canon EOS Rebel/ 300D. It came with an EFS 18-55mm lens and a 75-300 1:4-5.6 lens. I also purchased Fotodiox Macro-Tube-EOS Macro Extension Tube Set. I know I still need at least lights and a stand to take pictures of my coins. Can anyone give me cheap ideas on what else I can use to get good pictures? As much as I would like to just buy it all at once, I have a feeling this is going to take me a bit as I have a crap job with crap pay!

I've been reading one of the other threads here and now my eyes are crossing. I'm hoping that by starting this topic, I can get ideas for what is compatible with my new-to-me camera.

Thank you all for any input you can give me.

Just went through this myself in April I think. I have the T3i 600d, but I think these will fit yours also. I was helped by the best here. you will want to search ebay for M42 Pentrax adapter ($9.77) for female M42 42mm Macro Helicoid 35mm lens also on ebay ($26.95), and AC adapter + DC Coupler for Cannon EOS T2, T3, T4. Also ebay ($16.69) I'm sure you can get the stand there as well, but its best to get the pistol grip with the stand. As far as I know your 18-55mm is not good enough for the job. Is why Helicoid is recommended. ebay search those items for affordable cost, and a pro should be able to help push you in the right direction.

Did you get the software with the camera? You will need that to complete your pics.

@ mcshilling I didn't get a disc, however, when I plugged the camera into my computer, it loaded something onto it. I have to have it on a certain setting to be able to see the pics on my computer until I can find my CF adapter that's hiding somewhere.

@Minnimarine I think it was your thread that had my eyes start crossing!! Searching ebay now.
Is this the adapter you are talking about? https://www.ebay.com/itm/202773391284

The software you need is EOS Utility - DPP Digital Photo Pro. and Picture Style Editor if you don't have these go to the Canon web site , find the right camera and download the software it should be free.

Yes that would be the adaptor and you can go online to Cannon website to download the program. You will need the EOS Utility program. To crop and size your pictures, pick and choose the program you like. There are free editors. mcshilling is a great help as well. Ya that thread had my eyes crossed for weeks. You can find simple led lights you can clip onto something to get your light. I'm still working on getting the right lighting configuration. You will need the Helicoid lens, m42 adapter and the AC adapter. For your stand remember you need to be able to angle your camera straight down. I got a stand with a pistol grip. Also when your set up and taking pics and having a hard time with blur or white noise you will need to turn the subwoofer of. Took me a week to figure that problem& When you can or want Mcshilling will help you on that fancy device they have instead of the stand. The stand works just fine for me, but others don't like it.

So, I purchased the adapter that I linked earlier. I'm a bit lost on the Helicoid though. What I am seeing basically just looks like a tube with no lens. Is it supposed to look that way? Headed to the Canon website now to d/l the progams. :)

The helicoid is just that, a variable-length tube with no lens. One end attaches to camera, and lens goes on other end.

Hey LeatherHawk you will want the 75mm Nikon lens with that Helicoid that's around $45.00 . I don't remember if I or anyone mentioned that. That will land you some really nice pictures of Roosevelt, and Lincoln. It really helps when you get close ups for these experts to have a glance at like a RPM you can't make out. It also will help you with deciding is it worth waisting there time posting it. Experts will be able to zoom in on area in question without the picture getting to blurred like they do from pics off a phone. Your gonna love the first clear image you take and be amazed at the detail you see. Takes a minute to adjust to the light. I just from practicing noticed nature light works pretty good. At night it's different as you get glare from light sources from different directions. Like I said before this is the area I'm still working on and these ore merely my observations. Your gonna really enjoy this though. Rpmsrpm and mcshilling helped me out and I really appreciate there patience that they had with me.

There are certainly a lot of options out there for you. My personal choice when shooting is to use my all Canon set up attached to the PC via USB cable into Canon Remote software. I shoot an older 7D body primarily and attach my trusty old Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 macro lens.

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/...-8-macro-usm

This lens is superb quality, and considerably cheap since the new IS "L" lens was released a few years back, I see them regularly in like new condition for under $400 they were $900 when new.

I use the older non IS and non "L" version, partly because I already own it really see no need to upgrade as I am always shooting on a tripod or stand in a fixed position, so no need for image stabilization. I always shoot in "M" or manual mode, I set up a custom white balance (super easy to do), set my ISO at 100 (never any more than 200) then set my aperture at F/8 and dial in the correct shutter speed for my shot while using the computer histogram and the live view mode on my screen to get a good visual of my mid tones, then I shoot a couple frames at that speed and one up and one down, to look at on my color calibrated large monitor for an evaluation. Shutter times may change slightly as I continue shooting my coins, but not by much unless I change the type of coin, say from all red copper to brown copper, or copper to silver or even to gold. When a major change in coin subjects occurs is when I reshoot my test shot and settings adjustments.

To shoot a white balance shoot a blank piece of paper (white in place of where your coin would be) then move the Color Balance setting to Custom on the top screen (camera settings) then follow instructions, select your recent all white shot and that's it. You can even delete the white shot now that it's saved in memory. Do this when changing lighting out for different lamps, number of lamps or types of lamps or any real change in the lighting in the room.

I shoot in the evening in a fairly dark room, My stands are all black and I make sure there is nothing around that could influence color or reflect color like a coffee mug, or the computer screen, etc. curtains are drawn shut, especially in the day time. over head lights are turned off as well. I try to control my lighting as much as possible.

I focus using the computer and with Depth of field turned on, at F/8 I am able to get the field and the higher point of most coins I shoot all in acceptable focus with out having to use stacking software. This is an average shot I get. Cropped and the background removed (I shoot over a rubber mat that is matte black), I use Affinity Photo or Photoshop to open the RAW file (I only shoot RAW files), select the coin with the circular marquee, adjust size to coin edge, invert, feather 4 pixels delete/replace background with 100% black, adjust coin to be cropped in square frame, 3000px at 300dpi (I adjust size later depending on what I use the photo in).

Test of 4 different exposures all other setting the same.

The picked photo at larger size.

What I'm shooting currently, lots and lots of varieties of Two Cents, mostly lower grades from AG to AU all raw, I am shooting each coin obverse and reverse doing all out lined above, and cataloging them as well as working on a photo database of them, to show coins I own, for use at coin shows or when looking online for examples I don't have or need to upgrade, I have well over 1000 coins like this to shoot, both sides plus all the editing work, currently I am getting through around 25-50 coins per week. Many are being removed from holders, and put into new holders as I go labeling each coin with a unique ID that allows me to look it up quickly in my custom database I built for just this purpose.
----------------

I also have a bellows set up using one of several lenses for extreme close ups and ultra macro work, I did not touch on that here. See Ray Parkhurst for designing and building your own set up, I find them to work great, but are very tedious to set up and manually focus, I much prefer the hands off focusing by computer with the Canon lens I speak of above.

Ray's site is: http://www.macrocoins.com/

He is on here at CCF as well, and has already replied to this post!

You can't beat this method for the extreme close ups, but for my purpose of shooting a lot of the same coins over and over it's not what I need 90% of the time. Now I will get into that with some of the neater errors and varieties after I shoot the main lot of coins, and come back to re-shoot RPDs, DDO, and other oddities in very close up.

Example of a close up shot using the same Canon 7D camera but with a bellows attached and a APO-Rodagon D 75mm lens:

I usually pick up on things really quick, but for some reason, this has me ! I've been going from ebay to Amazon just to find the correct thing before I even start looking at pricing. Hopefully, this is the Nikon Lens that was talked about earlier.... https://www.amazon.com/Nikon-75mm-E...hoto&sr=1-13

If so, then I can take it from there for pricing. I was looking at the lens Westcoin was mentioning, but I cannot afford to drop $400 unless I save up for like 3 months. (My job blows!!) Anywho, am I looking in the right direction?

Leather

P.S. How do I make a signature here?

Yes. That appears to be the correct lens. You make sure you read what westcoin explained. That is the part I'm still trying to learn. For all those items I mentioned I did not pay over $100 for from ebay. Learning the terminology will lesson your headaches. Everything westcoin explained is no good to you if you don't know what white balance, ISO, Raw is or understanding the name andfunctions of the camera .
@westcoin I do apologize for not mentioning your name while thanking everyone for there patience with me. I like what I got, but I would like to get in a little closer on like Mercery's, Barbers, or even for my Half Dimes so I won't have to crop for the extreme close ups. That's how I do it for now anyways.

I get the camera terms, though I am still trying to figure out how to change the aperture and shutter speed. I've followed the instructions, but I'm not seeing that either of them has changed. I'm almost wondering if that part of the camera is a dud. That would mean searching for another camera body that would fit my current lenses. And, that would be just my luck! I am definitely taking everything everyone says to heart as I want to get the best pics I can. I kind of like the idea of the catalog... once I finally find an error coin and not just a Greaser!

So, I'm not finding that Nikon 75mm F/4N EL-Nikkor Enlarging Lens under $75. Plenty of 50mm lenses as cheap as I think I saw $35. is $75 a good deal for the 75mm?
