You do every thing you have to to get the coin the way you want it, looks good BUT the back ground doesn't .

Is there a way to change the back ground to one colour say black?

I use Digital Photo Professional. It has a circle crop function and makes the background black. You might be able to set other colors but I always make it black.

In Paint.net, you can do the same thing by using the ellipse selection tool. Determine the leftmost point and topmost point of the coin, then start the crop at that x,y position. End it where it encompasses the coin with minimal background showing. It may not be a circle. Then hit "crop to selection". Select the paint bucket tool, and hit the areas you want black. Much more involved than DPP, but gives the same result.

I use an older version of Photoshop CS 6 to replace my backgrounds with a color/texture combo layer. I haven't taken any Photoshop classes, so I'm sure my method for removing the original background could be improved, but it gets the job done.

I'm glad you asked this question! I pulled out a PS guide and I have a DVD of Photoshop Tips that I'm going to find and watch. I've only had it for 7 years, so I think it's about time.

In Paint.net, you want to use the circle select tool to mask the coin, then invert the selection (CTRL-I), press DEL to remove everything but the coin, then use the paint bucket to fill with your colour of choice.

The only reason why I do it this way instead of Crop to Selection is because the cropped image border will touch the coin and I prefer to have to space between the coin and the border. It also prevents you from having to use the paint bucket in all four quadrants.

Adjust the selection by grabbing the dots to tweak the selection.

Press CTRL-I to invert the selection (now the non-coin area is selected).

I do one coin at a time, then combine them into a single side-by-side image.

If you want to edit an image that is already side-by-side, it will take a little more work. You can use the Magic Wand selection tool and adjust the Tolerance to select just the existing background. It works fairly well if there is good contrast between the coins and background.

I do not know inches. I like pixels.

The image looks good. It is a 1000px image (999 actually), which is what I use most of the time for GTP.

Circle crop is in the Trimming/Angle tab, in the Aspect Ratio menu.

Your output with Paint.net looks great! No need to go with DPP IMO.
