1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent / LWC . Is This Clashed Dies Perhaps?

Dowhat Pillar of the Community United States 877 Posts	Posted 08/01/2021 3:10 pm I have been going through a good handful of 1944 LWC's, all AU or better. The eye appeal on this one stood out until further scrutiny. Much luster, wonderful cartwheel. The full obv. & rev. images represent the truest veiw of what I see. Any images provided otherwise are from scope to show some details. Ignore the color, refer to obv. & rev. images. I have previously posted some of theses 44's @ MS 62-64+ based on opinions garnered herewithin. This one does not have clean fields at all. The anomalies I observe are in relief as far as I have observed from many angles and light adjustment. Anyways, enough jibber jabber. Report this Post to the Staff

Eagle_Eye Valued Member United States 55 Posts	Posted 08/01/2021 5:09 pm That black and white photo, I see what could be a clashed E next to the first T of trust. Those rectangular looking lines there, could that be the lines on the Wheat stalk ? Something inside the top of the E in WE. Possible split on that first T in trust. I don't know. I suspected some sort of die event due to the nearly uncirculated condition of the coin. That pretty much ruled out any PMD. It seems this particular event might be more difficult to notice on well circulated coins. Can this be a result of excessive pressure during the strike? Report this Post to the Staff

I can remember "ghost image" much more easily and is usually what I use when searching for the PIDT. I have noticed that it is usually high AU or BU, REDs, that this can be seen on the best. I don't think it has anything to do with an excessive strike but more to do with just another form of deterioration of the dies. I have also noticed, this is more common in 40 series coins. Possibly a weakness in the particular design used at the time or just simply, over-used dies. Hope this helps some, I'm learning right along with you. -makecents- Report this Post to the Staff
