I was sorting through some coins and found this 1946 Booker T Washington coin. Not bad shape but appears to have some extra metal from the casting on the forehead over the left eye. Looked at several other examples on line and they do not appear to have it. Anyone ever see anything like this before?

I think that is a 1 in a million coin! It's probably worth millions. (just joking?) It looks like a die gouge I have never seen one on him before though. I see alot of stuff like that on Peace dollars.

First of all, coins are not cast- they are struck with dies so it is virtually impossible to have extra metal on a coin. Secondly, that is just a reeding hit(aka bagmark) from another coin, the surrounding metal was pushed up when the other coin hit it. The wavy pattern is a dead giveaway for a reeding hit.

So essentialy it is just a flaw. In your view does it detract from any valuation?

From the small part of the coin that I can see, I would say that it spent a brief time in circulation(some of the classic commems did circulate a bit) so I would grade it AU. Bag marks like that are common on larger coins and to be expected in circulated grades so it would only lower the grade if it was a Mint State coin.

Good call BIO, I would agree.I also think from the small picture it is hard to tell but looks like this coin was around and about(circulated) for a while.*** note the slice marks on the forehead and overall look.I have a few of these and booker IMO, has been around, just my opinion...
