Wow, that sucks. The listing is correct I suppose, he did say BOX ONLY. The people bidding were not very smart imo.

That's one expensive empty box! Hopefully the buyer realizes it before sending money.

Wow...there's no sense to that, unless people use those boxes to sell silver-plated clad quarters? Whenever I see an empty box bringing big $, I think of some scam.

Wow.... I have never seen such a high price for a box... Except for empty boxes for older Canadian Specimen sets. Maybe this price reflects the true market value? How much is a 1999 proof set worth these days?

Now I don't know the first thing about e-bay. but whats with all the astericks on all 24 bidders? Is this to hide bidders names till auction is over?

I sold a post-war Lionel Anniversary set empty master carton once for around $1200, but that made sense.

it says in the item headline proof set box and in the description it says box only I dont understand some people thats why you have to read the whole item description.
the seller did nothing wrong it is described as what it is a box.

OK it says 'box only' in caps, and the description is only one line long, so it's quite hard to miss..

The seller should of put no coins but they did put BOX ONLY. Some buyers don't pay attention at all.

I really can't fault the seller for this one. "BOX ONLY" is pretty conclusive. Greasy, maybe, but unequivocal.

Gah that is terrible. This actually happens quite often, and not just in the world of numismatics. I remember about 8 years ago or so, when a Playstation 2 was a really hot commodity, that people were bidding nearly $1000 for empty PS2 boxes. And the dealer explicitly said "BOX ONLY!" I guess a lot of people really just bid without really thinking.
