Hi,
Please could anyone help me with any info. on this coin...

The obverse legend starts "DNCONSTANTA?PFAUG"

The problem I have is the 11th character being an "A" which doesn't make sense to me?

I have been told that this is probably an engravers error of RIC VIII Trier 214 (Contantius II) with "A" instead of "I"...

Any additional info. would be great as I cannot find any other examples of this error?

Regards, Dan.

Hi Dan-
I think it is a very nice engravers error. I am sure he was properly reprimanded for his screw up!

Thanks Victor for your input...although I do think it is an "official" coin based on the design being very much like other coins being produced at the Trier mint for this series...
Thanks also for your thoughts Pendrak - I shudder to think of the fate of the poor engraver - miss-spelling the Emperors name would not be good for your future life-expectancy I would think...
Regards, Dan.

I don't think engraver errors were that uncommon. Presumably, they weren't punished, since so many of them get as far as being struck onto coins.

These are all similar errors made at a similar time, although not the same as yours (arguably, adding another N into Constantius is worse, as it gives you a different emperor):

There are many more. Judging by the posts in forums, it seems many collectors of Roman bronzes have one.

JohnConduitt, Thanks for the comments & the links to other examples of engravers errors...

In my look online for other examples, it looked like there was a few engraver-error examples from the Trier mint - so I was wondering if perhaps there was a poor engraver that suffered from dyslexia there...I know, a bit of a reach on my part.
It could be just the shear volume of coinage minted in Trier around that time?

Also, your nice welcome is much appreciated jbuck!!
