Hello, I have this 17th century Mexican 8 Reales coin which I want to test if it's real or not.

I've tried sounds (very unsure), magnets (passed), weight (haven't tried, the size varies), and the ice test (unsure). I will be going to a coin shop tomorrow to see if they can do anything. https://cutt.ly/tQ3ugoT

Definitive answer: X-ray fluorescence (XRF) test, if you know a jeweler. They will likely charge you to test.

First test: From whom did you buy it?

And, you know there are experts here who could comment based on photos.

Let us know what you learn at the coin shop.

My Aunt gave this to me as a gift and it was inside this wolf head box puzzle thing which I use to keep bullets & shells & occasionally find.

In fact, here it is! http://lumbermuseum.org/product/wol...-puzzle-box/ I guess my Aunt bought the coin from somewhere else.

I'm certainly no expert, but it doesn't look genuine to me at first glance. As mentioned, XRF is your best bet to determine composition.

Melting it down to a lump should solve this problem.
