100% Pure Acetone Questions

Just go to any paint store or hardware store. It is readily available
in quart and gallon cans.

Alright, thanks guys, need to clean up some of my verities to see what kind of condition they are actually in, once I get them cleaned up like my 2 1949 A to denticle I'll post them for grading and keep the best one.

I was at forteenos and picked up quo pure acetone, it's a cosmetics one with no other ingredients. Would this be ok to try out? I know there is no pureb100% acetone so I assume there could be a little bit of water. Should I avoid this brand? Next time I'm around home hardware or a paint store I'll grab a larger amount.

On a side note, should I only clean one coin in each acetone soak? Also should I rinse with water or(I'll have to get distilled water) or should I rinse it with acetone as well? Iv seen some mixed suggestions. Also if you don't know about this brand I could always test it on some basic 1940 pennies(have a lot of them)?

@T-BOP, as a heavy smoker and a healthcare worker I'm very precautions with flammable products since all the hand sanitizer I have to us, I read that acetone evaporates quickly so the fumes can ignite so I'm being carful. Soaking a 1938 penny to test it out. The bottle like all other ones dies say nail polish remover, but it's 100% pure acetone, no colours or perfumes. So hopefully it works.

There is no 100% acetone that I can buy from the hardware store? Then what am I going to use on the MS-70 Peace dollars I picked up at the flea market? Ack! Can't trust anyone anymore!

All joking aside, I agree that if it says "100%" or "pure" acetone, I would not trust either one more or less. Also make sure that it doesn't claim to "moisturize" or have any other special feature other than strip fingernail polish. FYI: I have seen cases of gallon jugs of acetone in a beauty shop store room before. The labeling was pretty generic, and the claims to purity were not any better or worse than the hardware store stuff I have on hand. I suspect the aversion to fingernail polish remover stems from manufacturers adding materials such as dyes, fragrances, and moisturizers to make their product special. That would not be desirable for us. Otherwise, I don't see any reason to expect "hardware" store acetone to be any higher purity.

You might test on a very shiny object, such as a cheap or impaired proof with mirrored fields. Check for cloudiness or haziness indicating nonvolatile residues. That is a crude, qualitative version of a "nonvolatile" matter measurement, an established laboratory test where the nonvolatile matter is quantified. Before you handle acetone a lot, make sure you understand all possible hazards. Read an SDS. Volatile organic solvents are especially hazardous with regards to their vapors catching fire.

Generally speaking, if a solvent is miscible with water, then it could have some water in it unless the water has been removed and it was kept in a sealed container. That said, water is a problem for some of us anyway. I live in a climate where if I dip a shiny piece of metal in acetone and allow it to evaporate, I often see condensation of atmospheric water onto the surface. The evaporative cooling of the acetone can be that significant where relative humidity is high. Consequently, I allow considerable drying time before putting a coin in a sealed holder.

If you really want cleaner solvents like acetone, you would need to purchase through a chemical supply company which provides a credible CoA. Be aware that as purity is pushed closer and closer to 100%, prices escalate very quickly. Search for "HPLC grade" and you will understand!

So after 15 minutes of soaking Some random cents in thus acetone iv noticed green on coins that was never there starts to appear, does this mean it should soak much longer or something else?

Possibly soak them longer one to five hours + or stop soaking your cents in Easter egg die . Sorry , just kidding . But do try soaking much longer in the Acetone .
