I have a 1908 Saint-Gaudens double eagle. When I first got it I was not familiar with coins so I did not hold it by the edge. I touched and rubbed it all over with my fingers. I found it strange that I did not leave any fingerprints on it. I learned that you should not clean old coins so I have not used acetone on it.

Should I use acetone on it? I already touched it so I'm afraid in the future some discoloration/fingerprints might appear because of that.

Should I use acetone on all coins before putting them in Air-Tites to get rid of any unseen contaminants?

. I am not familiar with using acetone on gold,I mainly use it on copper and a few clad. If you do use it,make sure it is 100% pure and not standard nail polish remover.

Yes by all means you can use acetone on any metal coins. Not too sure about proof coins as I never tried it . Giving coins an Acetone treatment is not considered cleaning them . It will not harm your coins .

Yes, no problem using acetone on any coins before placing in an Air-Tite, especially if they are mint state or proof and were recently mishandled. Fortunately gold is pretty inert and will not likely develop fingerprint marks.

I've used Acetone on Proof coins in the past and it works.

Makes good sense to treat a coin with acetone before encapsulating it.
Just make perfectly sure that you keep acetone well away from coin capsules or slabs.

Even a tiny droplet of acetone on a coin capsule or a slab will do damage. Acetone is a strong solvent of the type acrylic or polystyrene plastic from which capsules and slabs are made.

Used very carefully,
I have even used tiny droplets of acetone to permanently seal a coin capsule. The capsule will need to be broken to get the coin out.
