Niue Beskar Bar - No Queen Elizabeth?

HappyHippo Valued Member United States 266 Posts	Posted 08/26/2021 09:28 am I received the Niue beskar bar. One side has the royal crown on it but not the usual portrait of the Queen. I don't think I've ever seen that before. Was there any overt reason for that? Report this Post to the Staff

The portrait may have detracted too much from the fantastical nature of the bar. But really, I think you may be correct that is was done for aesthetic reasons. I thought it was required to put the Queen on legal tender, but that is probably not strictly true for the Commonwealth countries. Report this Post to the Staff
Sap Moderator Australia 16806 Posts	Posted 08/26/2021 6:22 pm The queen being on the obverse of the coins of Britain or other Commonwealth Realms is a convention or tradition, not a law. Each Realm sets its own rules and regulations regarding coinage design. Some Realms (such as Kiribati and Papua New Guinea) do not use the monarch's portrait at all, unless the coin is commemorating a royal event. In the case of Niue, we have a "country" that is being used as a flag of convenience; the "real issuer" is the New Zealand Mint, a private mint. The administration of Niue has presumably issued a carte-blanche coin design approval, in exchange for receiving a cut of the profits from sales. Meaning the New Zealand Mint is free to issue "coins" of whatever form, design and theme their marketeers can dream up. Including Star-Wars-themed bullion. Sap Moderator Australia 16806 Posts	Posted 08/26/2021 6:27 pm To add: I suspect the New Zealand Mint usually puts the Queen's portrait on their products because Australian and New Zealand coin collectors are conditioned to seeing the queen's portrait on coins; a coin-like object looks more like a coin once the portrait is added. Beskar ingots do not look like coins at all, so adding the portrait won't help matters much. Furthermore, I don't think Australian and New Zealand coin collectors are the main target market here. This one's going global, particularly aimed at the US market.
