I got this 2014 quarter in my change. Only one side is damaged. Head side has some circulation markings but the Tails side is just trashed!

Damage is damage. Unless you were there at the time,
you might never know exactly what happened.
The important thing is that it could not have happened
during the striking of the coin.

oh I do not doubt it is after mint, but just so weird that so much damage to the one side and rim but nothing related on the other side.

Not that weird... Have seen this from coins on the street... The rubber of a car or truck tyre is actually quite gentle as it grinds the other side of the coin into the road surface. Call it road-rash.
