Is the defect on this Loonie considered an occluded gas bubble {it is quite firm and does not seem to flex with toothpick pressure} and if so what could be the estimated value

I mostly focus on doubled dies and not so much on errors, however, I do know that the obverse was fully struck before the bubble formed as the crown has all the details intact and it did not appear until after the coin went through the minting process.

Overall I would assume something like this would be considered Post Mint Damage, but I would wait for more opinions as I do not know if something like this would have a premium.

This is quite a large gas bubble, has some premium but not much demand for this type of error.

Barnacle. Very fitting name. .

1st off, this is a very low mintage loon. Really hard to come by out of circulation, which yours has seen a lot of. That's what is puzzling me. From the rough life this coin has seen, how the heck did that bubble survive intact.

This makes sense. Playing devil's advocate, could the bubble have been present pre-strike, flatted while being struck, then rebounding upon ejection? I doubt it, but wanted to ask.

I don't see any kind of tampering or heat damage, so I don't think it's a garage job.

I would say it has a premium, if it is not PMD.

I hope SPP pops by to set us straight.

Looks convincing and legit. There is no obvious evidence of heating by a torch, which how folks "make" these type of things.

This is not a popular error type, but it should be still worth anywhere between $25 to $50.

Can you expand, no pun intended, on how this was formed? I'm so intrigued.

Is there a small rust spot between the H and II ? Could be underlying corrosion.

Thee are 3 locations of slight discolouration - 2 on the front {near Z A & H II} and one on the back by the N, which could not be lifted with light applications of water, alcohol or acetone.

The underlying metal is pure nickel (hence why they are magnetic), it would not blister out like that.

The description in the link {http://www.error-ref.com/gas-bubbles/} seems to perfectly describe this defect - an occluded gas bubble - with a thick roof. Thanks.
