Hi gang, here's a quick one: I went on line to research what kind of activity uncirculated 1972 Kennedy half dollars are seeing. My research took me to an ebay listing for "1972 John F Kennedy half dollar, X Mark". The description below only slightly expands as, "1972 John F Kennedy half dollar, X Mint Mark.", and is asking $2300. So my question is; What is an "X" mint mark? I can't find any resource on line for an "X" mark, and looking at the seller's pics, their "D" mint mark looks pretty standard (not even double stamped). I'm including a grab of the auction picture (rather than link to an actual ebay auction).

My bet would be the seller has confused the designers initials, at he base of Kennedy's neck, for an "X" and assumed it was a mint mark. I can't explain how he/she missed the obvious "D" mint mark.

to the CCF! The area that looks like an "X" is really a stylized GR, the initials for Gilroy Roberts. The small "D" under the bust and above the date is the Denver mint mark as nfine noted.

That's what I was thinking, and might explain why he is having trouble unloading this one for the $2300 price tag. (It was previously listed, listed as "sold" and is now relisted...) I know that Etsy is infamous for people posting absurdly high sale prices for collectables, but I thought ebay was a bit more "sane."

The problem only increased when ebay began allowing relisting without incurring the listing fee each time whether it sold or not. So they keep on being shown for months on end at times. All of them by individuals who, first, know absolutely nothing about coins or coin collecting and two, can't manage to at least look at the average price of similar coins on the same page.

90% of the stuff I'm scrolling through is repeat junk listed at 2x-3x what it would actually sell for at auction. I look less and less since it is so frustrating.
