Got my copy stand. The LED's are super bright.
Just need to figure out camera setup/distance from coin
light angles/distance etc. I know it trial and error
but a jumpstart would be helpful. the half dollar photos
were taken raw/fine.

raw

fine, you can see the difference in sharpness across the coin

Looks like you need to filter your lights and maybe even eliminate one light?

Looks promising. Lighting is a touch harsh. Yes, next experiment would be to diffuse the lighting--perhaps using translucent white plastic or tracing paper. Adjusting exposure settings may help too. Would also suggest shooting the coin(s) against a black background--helps to reduce the amount of light 'bouncing back' into the camera's lens.

I agree you need to defuse your lights.

I picked up some diffusing fabric either on ebay or Amazon and then simply cut out a square patch and wrapped the light and used electrical tape to keep the fabric on. A simply cheap fix when you need to diffuse a light.

I read 14% gray scale background works well.

lighting in this setup is very broad. It is good for proof coins, but for business strikes, the effect will be too flat, with no shadows to provide a 3D image. In this setup, there is no way to show the luster band on the coin either. You need at least one more narrow light source of the same color temperature at a low angle.

these lights came diffused already.
just a test photo, working on configuring distances
angles, etc. now. I'm looking for my black background, it's around here somewhere.

I am far from giving advice on photo taking, with that said. 1st pic looks nice, maybe a bit too bright? 2nd pic looks like it is showing a haze on the coin?3rd pic,a bit too bright? Wait for the pros to help you though.
