hello! I purchased this ring on ebay from cody11111 in August 2019, unfortunately I didn't save any of the information in the post about it. when I contacted them today, they pointed me here! I've been trying to search this forum and I'm having no luck so far. If anyone recognizes it or knows a better place to post this please let me know. thanks!

mmgregory: to the CCF! Coinincidentally, there is a rather extensive chain of Gregory jewelers stores in Sydney.

In your case take this ring to a jewelry or bullion dealer, and have the ring tested - using XRF.
If it is ancient, there should be trace amounts of elements that the ancients could not refine out. The presence of trace elements other than the intended alloying metals would be a sure indication that the ring is of ancient origin.

It appears that it may be a more modern signet ring, that has suffered the effects of in ground burial for some decades.
Worth an XRF test anyway, just to assess the purity.

mmgregory;

Looking back at the 2019 records, this is all I come up with so this may not be one of the Donald Jackson pieces after all. (When I replied to you on ebay saying here is where the Donald Jackson ring information is.) So that link won't help you sorry I assumed when you mentioned a ring it was one of his. When I buy estates of ancient coins I find things like this and here is the record of your sale.

Powerful Braided Design Ancient Roman Bronze Ring US Size 5-6 (16-17mm)
Order status: Paid
Paid $6.25 with PAYPAL on Aug 16, 2019 06:54 PDT
Item ID: 303251724679

Thus I may have had no other information on it myself. The ones from Donald Jackson I knew a lot more about. So that is all I know. But as others have suggested there can be some information based on what the ring itself presents and the XRF idea is not a bad one that was suggested to you.
