If it is ancient, there should be trace amounts of elements that the ancients could not refine out. The presence of trace elements other than the intended alloying metals would be a sure indication that the ring is of ancient origin.
It appears that it may be a more modern signet ring, that has suffered the effects of in ground burial for some decades.
Worth an XRF test anyway, just to assess the purity.
