Weird Date On 1940-S US Cent

I found this while going through a batch of cents from my brother-in-law. The last digit looks as though the bottom circle of a 5 has been somehow straightened and pushed int the position of the diagonal stroke of a 7. And there is an odd semicircular clip of the previous 4 where the crossbar extends beyond the vertical stroke. I can't imagine how this could happen either in the minting process or as post-mint damage. Any thoughts are welcome.

Yep, likely from a coin rolling machine.

You will also find 1941 LWCs with the 1 knocked at an angle selling on ebay as a variety.

this is damage from a machine of some sort.

Your coin is a 1945-s and the title should read so. I agree with PMD.

Also note the base of the '4'? It was starting to flow towards the rim on the strike. Thus it distorted that area because it was reaching out towards the rim.
