I've had this coin in my collection for a few years now, an ecu d'or minted in Montepellier (Mint N) in 1790 in the name of Louis XVI, the unfortunate king who was to die at the guillotine in January 1793 during the French Revolution.

Besides the historical aspect, this is apparently quite a scarce coin due to the very small initial mintage from Montpellier in 1790. Unfortunately, I lack any catalog information for this coin (mintage, values etc), and would greatly appreciate it if anybody here can help.
Thanks!

That is a beautiful louis d'or, and it carries a lot of history. I would grade it VG10 - F12. My Gadoury doesn't give mintage but indicates rarity R4, which could translate to mintage in the 1,000's rather than 10,000's I think. The value given for sligthly better grade is 750 €.

I would think that in all probability, is that the mintage records have been lost.

The rarity rating is the result of the accumulation of auction records.

Quality of strike - weak in places.

Coin Facts claims that the mintage is 9,683. I believe that the example depicted in the entry is yours.

Numista does not appear to include this date and mint at all (which is actually quite an unexpected oversight for a French site).

Interestedly enough, the example on Coin Facts is the coin you have in your possession.

Thank you all for your comments. I also saw that the example pictures on-line is my example. It is ex. Goldbergs 2013.
I will definitely check Coin Facts. Thanks again for that reference.
The catalog reference I generally use for World Coins is the NGC World Coin database and I was surprised to see that this date was not listed at all. That prompted my question.

Nice coin, I would grade it as TB20.

Gadoury (1978) shows a mintage of 9,683 without any valuation data.
France,-Louis-XVI-Ecu-D'or-1790,-Montpellier-Mint
(values in Francs)

Deswelle (2011) lists 1790-N as rarity index 3 and value of €600.
France,-Louis-XVI-Ecu-D'or-1790,-Montpellier-Mint
(values in €)

I estimate it would sell at auction today for €800 - €900.

Thank you very much, @t360 for that very interesting and valuable information. I have heard of Gadoury before, but never of Deswelle.
Merci, mon ami!

F-15, possibly VF-20.
