Die chip, possible that there is glue or something on the letter. It looks like the letter is intact underneath what ever it is.

Looks to me as some sort of surface blemish or defect. Maybe a die chip or chemical stain? NOT a lamination.

Try a quick soak in acetone and see if it comes off.

Looks like the area is level with the fields.

@coop It is not level with the field, but lower.

Thanks for the extra image. It looks now like a struck through issue. Something thin like a piece of plating from another coin. That would explain why there is plating there, and the hitchhiker fell away post strike. The extra view helped a lot. The foil was in the shape of the track left behind. ( making a big foot cast there)

Thanks a lot @coop. So "Strike Through Foil"?
Is this common, worth holding onto, or just neat?

Well I've only seen this a few times. So I would not say common. But the premium would be minor. (Foil and as in plating scrap)

Interesting, so there would be a sister to this coin missing the "plating foil'? Out of curiosity what would it look like? Also since I have neve come across this would the coin that had a piece missing look like a struck through as well even though it was a piece of metal removed during the striking process? Would it just look like a weak strike on the coin that had this happen?
