Obviously the 3 is not lined up in the date (that's on me ) PCGS said altered date,, I guess theflattened out numbers are an indication. All in all it's a good counterfeit *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

The giveaway to me is the lower tail of the 3, which does not extend out into the field beyond the upper tail as in the genuine example.

Very interesting, and thanks for the follow-up photos. I'd imagine under close inspection with a loupe, one would see toolmarks.
Indeed a strange looking date, but the date is close enough for a first time buyer.

Altered date? Wow. I see the difference in the threes. Someone did some fine work there though.

Quote: My best guess would be a 1951-S I agree. But I am taking a guess based on what I think would be easiest to tool. Quote: (btw, for novices, the top pic is the fake) The top picture, higher grade coin (red, red-brown), is real. The bottom one (brown) has an altered date.

The 3 is a match to that of a late 30's cent so I'll assume its originally a 1935-1939 cent. (Also that mintmark style was retired in 1941) 1936 would probably be the easiest to make into a 1. They did a darn good job of that, the 1 looks very natural.
The space between the 9 and the 3 is a dead giveaway though, the style of the 3 is not as obvious.
