1978 Ike Dollar Cladding? - Coin Community Forum

Krisalane Valued Member United States 79 Posts	Posted 10/22/2021 2:25 pm Hello all. I have two 1978 big dollars in about the same condition. However, one of them has a normal, shiny looking reverse and the other a flat, satin looking finish that feels a bit less smooth(? I don't have a good term for this). What would be the cause of this? coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 10/22/2021 2:44 pm Not all the stock metal is the same color though out the roll. Some areas can be normal nice looking, other areas can be affected a bit and the color altered. Also the coins may have experienced different contact substances that could have altered them. The point is it is not the discolored ones that are more favorable. It is the nicest ones that have a higher premium in nice condition. The distractions lower the value of a premium if there is one attached to to the coin. So when you have a choice, get the ones ones with the better eye appear. The ones with problems will be a hard coin to sell, because of the problem. The nicest coins, everyone wants. So which is better for you now with this information? Report this Post to the Staff

I see what you're saying though, if I wanted to sell coins I should look for the prettiest shiny I can find, right? Maybe some day I'll try the grading and selling part, roll hunting or whatever. Currently I'm going through all the things I've saved and wondered about through the years, things I found odd... it's a fishbowl full of the coins I liked but never had time for before now.
