A friend of mine a couple of years ago needed a dollar bill for some change she had. She gave me two quarters and a Half Dollar and in return gave her the dollar bill. I thought the Half Dollar was pretty cool and upon further inspection of it realized that there was an odd mark/indentation located in the sun on the face of the coin. I haven't been able to find any coin like it with the same mark anywhere. The coin is in pretty good condition. I'm afraid to take it to a coin collector and get ripped off so I figured I'd find people who might know what they're talking about. Below are a few links to pics of the actual coin.

A little blurry but this is about the best I can get out. You can see the little 'mark' located in the center of the sun. I would think that someone may have put it there but the thing that is getting me is that the edges are raised around the mark kind of like the edge of a coin. So it almost seems like it was put there when the coin was made. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome to Coin Community. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but....

It looks to me as if someone tried, and failed, to drill all the way through the coin. If that had happened during the minting process, for instance if some foreign object had been between the dies, then either the strike would have mashed it and there wouldn't be any metal raised around the hole, or the strike would have been extremely weak because the foreign object wouldn't have allowed the dies to get close to each other. As a result, I'd say you have a coin with post-mint damage which has essentially no collector value.

On the bright side, it's silver so it is worth approx $5 so not a bad swap for a dollar bill!
