As far as coins are concerned, other uses for them can be far more practical.
There are a couple of bronze coins in the bottom of the toilet cisterns in my house to kill the brown algae that normally would grow there. Inside of the cistern and water always sparking clean.

I am a gem facetor, Aussie yellow sapphire is my favorite stone to cut. Nevertheless, I have never cut a stone that has been set in jewelry for myself. The female recipients were always my wife, my sister, and my daughter.

We used to use cents to level table legs.
