When half dollar roll hunting a few days ago, there must have been someone who busted out some mint sets and took them to the bank which I bought to search. Over on the half dollar crh thread, I posted my finds along with 2 pics. I was toying with the possibility of the 2 1989-Ds being prooflike, but not sure. After searching more online, there indeed seems to be a number of various pl's to be found. I am also mot sure if there is a value grade attached for these coins.

The picture may not do this coin any justice, and it looks like a MS-67 to me personally.

Hard to tell from the pics, but looks like a 65 to me. Maybe PL though.

I agree that it is hard to tell PL from the pictures. Certainly 2x2 worthy but not worthy of TPG. I believe that any coin from circulation displaying mirror like surfaces deserves a place in a 2x2.

The scratches on the reverse probably caused this coin to enter circulation.

Mint sets tend to get cut up hundreds at a time and poorer examples are just redeemed at the bank. Only about 10% of this date are usually spent in this manner and the problem tends to be scratches. Usually large deep ones rather than these shallow ones.

A lot of mint set half dollars from that era are very shiny because they were struck on burnished planchets but true PL's made by basined dies are not much more common than in the '70's.

If this is PL then it's a keeper but odds are it is not. If it were true PL it probably wouldn't have entered circulation.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

PCGS has a set standard for designating a given coin as Prooflike, or "PL." These grading standards are the following:

- There must be a clear reflection in the fields on both sides of the coin as viewed from two to four inches away.

- Cloudiness or striations may impede the reflectivity on eligible Prooflike coins.

Historically the PL designation was awarded only to qualifying Morgan dollars. However as of July 1, 2019, PCGS began bestowing the PL designation to all qualifying Mint State United States and world coins, medals, and tokens regardless of type.

it is what it is of course, seems to me just another way for grading companies to dig a little deeper into people pockets looking for the new designations.
