Here's a recent find, which looks very similar to Numismat's 1861/57 overdate.
When studying overdates, I'll take shots from several different lighting angles to pick out the underlying details.
Does anyone notice anything different to the other 1861/57? (second photo)

For starters, how about the spacing of the digits 61?

The legends look flatter in the top one, not sure if that's due to wear or die state.

Yes, I would agree...and this coin is far more worn than yours.

To show the difference, I did an overlay of the date on both coins.
By scaling the 186 of the date to closely match the underlying coin, there's a clear difference in the distances between 61 in the date, as shown by the white and black arrows.
Since my coin has noticeably closer spacing, I can only guess it's a different die.

You're probably right. A die variety is the only thing that would make sense. It's obviously not a counterfeit. And if it were, then it would be a heck of a good one. =)
