Hi,
I'm trying to help my friends who have a collection of different coins however we don't know how to tell if they're or fake. If anyone could please help me with this or point me in right direction I'd be forever grateful. Thank you

A little more information would help, are they USA coins, foreign coins,
old, new, silver etc.
One method is to compare a known genuine coin with your coin and see if there are any discrepancies.

Agreed, there are way too many counterfeit coins in the marketplace these days. Aside from posting pictures of your coins here, may I suggest getting a digital scale which reads to two decimal points and a caliper which reads in MM. You can look up the specifications of the coins in question from the Red Book or other publication and compare to your readings. Please note that worn examples will weigh less than what the specifications say but there shouldn't be a huge difference like say 1 gram or more which would set off a red flag. Next you could learn how to conduct a specific gravity test that will indicate if the coin is of the correct composition or a plated fake over a cheap base metal. More experienced collectors can tell at a glance usually by the details. I would say the weight and measure is probably your best tool for the inexperienced.
