I'm a newbie and would love to get some thoughts on these two. The 1802 has pretty dark tone, so curious how that may affect grade.

Coin #1: G-6 Details, Environmental Damage

Coin #2: This has a ton of detail on it, but unfortunately this coin also looks to have environmental damage. Details look to be about XF-45/45 though. Could be a good candidate for professional conservation.

your first coin is an overdate. 1800/79. the coin has probable survival number of around 800 coins. thats the good news. the bad news is that the coin does have what is considered ED or environmental damage to the coin. it may have been a dug coin at one time but in any case the coin looks to have been cleaned so it would still receive a details designation. I would put the coin at G6 details. the value of this coin, even though rare, does not really jump in value until you get to better grades and with the details designation not worth a whole lot but it does have collector value due to its rarity

the 1802 is in much better condition but most likely was cleaned at some point. i'd say VF35 or maybe as high as XF40 I'm not 100% certain it would grade straight but the eye appeal is less than average. my best guess is that it would details also. it could still have a decent value due to its higher grade

I'm at G details (ED) and EF details (ED). Enjoy @panzaldi's analysis as always.

Very nice pair of coins! I don't see heavy amounts of corrosion on either so I am unsure if they would grade straight.

Thanks for the great information. Probably improper storage. When I found them all the Large Cents were loose in a plastic bag that had been in a box in a closet. There are other dates that are similar condition to the 1802, but look to have the same issues. Kind of a bummer I guess.

Not uncommon to have issues on copper that is over 220 years old. Still collectible, some of the country's first coinage!

I would recommend sending the 1802 to NCS, even in XF details its still a $3-400 coin or so.
