For most of the 20th Century, Britain has only struck the Crown coin rarely, usually as a commemorative piece. Originally with a face value of 5 shillings (60 pence), after 1967 they were revalued at 25 New Pence. Between 1965 (Churchill) and 1990 (Queen Mother's Birthday), The only years issued were 1972 (Queen's Silver Wedding Anniversary), 1977 (Silver Jubilee), 1980 (Queen Mother's Birthday) and 1981 (Charles' Wedding). While Crowns were issued only occasionally, they were minted in fairly high numbers. After 1937, they contained no silver. They are fairly easy to find and inexpensive to buy. I do not think that they were ever found in circulation. My 2005 copy of Collectors' Coins Great Britain puts the current value of the 1981 Crown at 1 Pound. I saw one this weekend at my local coin shop with a $3.00 price tag.

There is a whole series of Charles and Diana Royal Wedding issues put out by various UK territories, colonies and countries of the Commonwealth.

As Charles is next in line for the Throne, you will see he and Diana face left, opposite to Queen Elizabeth II who faces right. On a few coins in the series they have him facing off center or even facing right, not sure whether this breached any protocols.

There are other coins in other years to feature, Charles and/or Diana and also other members of the Royal Family and it is interesting to see which way they face in relation to the Queen.

Thanks for the information on this coin. I had received one of these back in '81 and have been carrying it around thinking it would be worth something someday. Apparently I will have to wait quite a bit longer. I guess it is still a neat coin to have though. Thanks again!

I'm guessing that when they issued the 1980 commemorative crown for the Queen Mother's eightieth birthday, they wouldn't have guessed she would live another 21 years!

Australia issued a circulating comemorative 50-cent for the Royal Wedding of 1981.
And a 20-cent for Prince William & Cate.
