With the cold weather we have had the last 2 weeks. I finally found time to search a couple of 5000 coin bags I had picked up last November. Both bags were from Lincoln hoards.
The first bag was what you would expect. Most coins where from the 40's and 50's. Good mix of mint marks. But I did end up with the following
249 coins from 1909-1919. Most of these where in the good to very good condition. Out of this group there where 14 D mint marks and 16 S mint Marks. The best coins where a 1911-D and a 1913-S
421 coins from 1920-1929 Same with this group. Most were in the good to very good condition. But there was 1 coin that would make a F easy if not extra fine. That was a 1923-S. Totals where 99 D mint marks and 71 S mint Marks, Of the S mint Marks there where 15 1928-S.
722 coins from 1930- 1939. This group had the best results. With most of the S mint marks making vg to Fine grade. There where 141 D mint marks and 143 S mint marks. The 2 best coins where a 1930 S which would probably grade an EF and a 1932 D which grades a Fine.
Also out of this bag there was 82 1941 S mint coins and 72 42-S coins. Really high number for those 2 coins. Also I must've ended up with a least a roll of bright red cents from the 50's in at least MS-63. Also had 14 common Indian Head Pennies all in good condition.
The second bag was by far the best bag. This one was from a recent hoard that was just bought this last fall by this dealer. Upon opening the bag and dumping it. Right on top there was 32 bright red Lincolns. To my surprise 2 of these were a 1918-S which would get at least a MS-63 and a 1918 which would grade at least that. I am seriously thinking about having these 2 certified. They are that nice. Now my first thought was that someone stacked this bag to make it look like you hit the jack pot. For the first 4 or 500 coins I searched. It was beginning to look like a bag of 40's and 50's. Then I found a 1911-S in G condition. Then I found a coin I never thought you find in a Bag of cents. A 1931-S which should grade in the EF to AU range. Probably closer to EF.
In all this was a good bag. I found
1909-1919 189 coins. 21 D mints and 33 S mints. This included a 1915-S in G condition. Along with the 1918 & 1918S mentioned above.
1920-1929 358 Coins 79 D mints and 82 S mints. This group contained 2 1923-s in Fine and also a 1928 D and a 1929 D in VG.
1930-1939 471 Coins 104 D mints and 79 S mints. Along with the 1931 S it included, 4 1930 S and 2 1931 D's in fine condition.
It also had 22
Indian Head cents all commons in G condition.
So not to bad of results. I am usually skeptical of so called unsearched bags but with this dealers he has never steered me wrong. I did go back and get 2 more bags from him from this last hoard he had bought. I hope these 2 bags are just as good as the first one.
