There is some splitting between a woody and improper alloy mix and in general it may just be up to the eye of the beholder. I don't call coins like this woodies, but they do seem to have a serious alloy problem. This is pretty much 100% coverage of the problem mix, and seemed like a good coin to post as it's fairly interesting and would love to learn more about how these really come about. 1939 Lincoln Wheat cent mint error - improper alloy mix

Extremely dramatic and extremely cool! It looks like it was struck on a wooden planchet.

Like the coin a lot. Aren't those tiny laminations starting all over the coin due to the planchet defects?

This is a type of coin that could be expected to have a lot of lamination issues, but not really seeing that here.

Nice one Bats!
I remember this type of "error" was the first few that I found, and really got me into the hobby. Personally, it's one of my favorites, even if it doesn't carry a massive premium.

Never seen that before. It looks like it was made from cork.

That one is definitely a keeper in my eyes. It has attractive character to me.
I am also interested in the metallurgy of how these come to be. If I recollect right, I think Condor has explained on this forum or another that the alloy is mixed in more of a solid (powdered like?) state than a liquid state. Maybe he can pop in and elaborate? If anyone has any references to share, TB isn't the only one curious about this!
