I was wondering how to identify this variety if it is even recognized as one still as I hear the chrome can wear away rather easy. I see no trace of chrome on this. I'm posting it with two other chrome plated nickels for comparison. I posted this before when it was the first year I found that was supposed to be chrome plated but as I didn't have one to compare to I didn't actually know how different the chrome plated ones looked.

Look in Charlton. All commemorative 51's were just nickel.

Ahh,so all 51 commemorative like the 46 5 cent, so there is only a missing chrome version for the non commemorative. Thanks okie.

Edit: 46 not 47

I see nothing in the Charlton about any missing chrome versions. I read somewhere on here I believe that some grading companies no longer recognize the missing chrome varieties as the chrome could have just worn off? Haven't come across anything in the RCNA journals about them either.

The graders will no longer recognize them because it is too hard to distinguish
a non chrome Nickel from one where the chrome has been intentionally removed.

NO. What I said was that ALL 1951 commemorative 5 cents were all nickel. I said nothing about any other date. And, instead of 1946/47 that you mentioned in the same sentence with chrome, it is the 1944 & 45 that were chrome plated, not the 46/47. The 46 & 47 were all nickel. You need to read and look in Charlton or Haxby concerning what date had which alloy. An every day Charlton or Haxby will never say anything about missing chrome or any other anomaly. Only in the back-of-the-book variety section of a certain edition covering varieties will they be mentioned.

Makes sense, the chrome plating is so thin I imagine it would be almost impossible to tell if authentic or not. Won't bother looking for the missing chrome ones.

I was referring to exactly what it said in my Charlton okie, the composition for the 51 commemorative nickel it's the same as the 46, 46 being nickel as well.
