Been seeing a lot of tapered planchets recently, but finally nailed down a nice struck on rolled thin stock coin. Well, it's actually kind of spotty, and has what may be a struck through thing going on around the lower left bust (it's incuse), so not super nice in the looks department. But very light and I am pleased with it. Just pulled it out of a roll. 1954-S Lincoln Wheat cent mint error - struck on rolled thin planchet 2.40g

Thanks! Found it in a roll of 1954-S uncirculated coins. There are a couple rolls in this set and a ton of BIE coins and a few RPMs. Just sifting out the better stuff right now and will attribute things later. Several other light coins showing up but only in the 3.03 range so leaving them in there.

All right, a second example just showed up from another of the rolls. This one isn't as light or with as much detail gone, but it's a far better grade coin. Coming in at 2.58g I'd call this one a total winner. 1954-S Lincoln Wheat cent mint error - thin planchet coin 2 - 2.58g

Nice example. I like those, but they don't get as much love as clipped coins.

You are correct @john1. At least to my knowledge. Unless a large retained struck through in which case it would way slightly more.

Nice finds TB.
It's all about the weight. IMHO, these don't get the same love struck-throughs or clips do because these take a little more effort to attribute and verify. The easier something is to see, the more "umph" it has to the community as a whole.

Thanks folks! And yes, it's all about the weight when attributing these and mostly about the visual appeal for value. But even though these aren't highly popular, I'd still say they are a stretch above clips which are so common that they have to be quite large to draw much over a dollar or two.

Nice finds indeed! I'd probably missed these thinking it was Greaser.

Just lightly drop them on the desktop and the sound is unmistakable for a light planchet.

Can you record that sound for us TB? I've never tried that. Who knows when I'll find another.

Hmmm, that would take teaching a dinosaur how to make and upload sound files. It's just a super-obvious higher pitch. You'll hear the same sound when you drop one of the thin acid washed cents that are so common in wheat bags. You can't miss the higher, tinny, pitch of it.
