Start somewhere around VF.

OK, so your actual sale value probably won't be much above bullion, once you factor in anything you spend to sell it. We can all point out that the date is common, there's too much cheek acne, and there are hints of surface alterations (eg, spot removal) on the obverse (could be the pic).

You could check through to see if it matches one of these VAM varieties: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c.../1897-S_VAMs . I didn't see one but I don;t have the coin in front of me, either. The right VAM can sometimes yield the right buyer.

No matter what it's worth, it is still a nice coin with great eye appeal. I love that color and that working-class, mid-grade feel. Decades ago, it was handling coins just like this -- stashed in my grandfather's cigar drawer -- that engendered my love for the hobby.
