I am going through a bunch of toned 1970's cents and I noticed there are changes in the "7" between 1970 and 1971 a
It seems to me that they used a skinny necked "7" for the 1970's mint and then they proceeded to thicken it up a bit for the "71" and was progressively thickened again for the following years.
I tried to make a collage but my camera isn't the best so it might be better to look at nicer examples but can any one comment or give more information about this?

Unless all the photos were taken at the same magnification or closeness to the coin, as well as the amount of wear on the coin, there will be visual differences. All digits and letters are thinner at the top and thicker as it goes to the bottom. The dies are tapered so they are easy to release from the planchet once the strike is finished. Also, as the dies are used, they wear down and things get wider/fatter. It's called Die Deterioration.

Here is a better example of what I am talking about.
Any info out there about these changes?

The '75 looks like an entirely different font.

Ya I remember seeing the change in fonts while going through my small cents. I think in 75 the 7 got much thicker, and the point bottom was more blunt.

Maybe JohnWayne can comment as to the font changing through the years I believe I remember him saying something about the changes. I do agree though at some point the font completely changed. From your pics the 70/71 have similar or identical font but the top arch appears arched to me for 71.

The 1970 cent has a thin swan like neck on the 7. I think this was the normal "7" used in the most prior dates that had it.. The 1971's "7" has almost the same look but there was an attempt to slightly fortify the thinnest part of the neck. and it makes the seven look less rounded. Then for 1972 and 1973..it's it same 7 as 1971 but with a slight change that makes it look a bit straighter. Then we see the new fortified "7" when we look at the 74's and 75's. Correct me if I am wrong.
