I have finally received my last acquisition. Iīm afraid the photo is not very good but I canīt understand how can you make so good photos . Image: 20k.jpg98.69 KB Image: 20k2.jpg92 KB 20 kreuzer from Austria, Francis II (1768-1835), in an interesting grade, but the scratches in the bust make me think that I have paid too much for it. I am not worried about this because this is a hobby, and I assume you always lose money with hobbies. Moreover, Francis II is my favourite Austrian king/emperor for some reasons: - During his reign, Austria produced many different coin types, with several mintmarks. - His uncle, Emperor Joseph, wrote Francis was "neither more nor less than a spoiled mother's child". Joseph could be right because Napoleon defeated Francis II over and over again. - He was so spoiled that he declared himself "Emperor of Austria" and closed down the Holy Roman Empireand and its 844 years old. And here goes the doubt: Why so many 20 kreuzer coins of those years have some intentionally made scratches in the shield? I will post one or two examples.

Even with the scratches it's still a very nice coin.

I post two examples of the intentionally made scratches in the shield of 20 kreuzer coins. It seems that someone has taken his time scratching the shields very, very slowly. These are two examples but I have observed the scratches in really many 20 kreuzer coins. Itīs odd that other coin types (copper coins or no 20 kreuzer silver coins) donīt have them. It would appear that there was an special interest about these coins. But, why?

Though the images are kind of hard to see I would assume the scratches you refer to are "adjustment marks". These are fairly typical on silver coins of this period. After the coins are struck, they are weighed, if the coin is overweight some of the metal is scraped off to bring it to the correct weight.

Thanks for the info, I think you are right. I have read about adjustment marks but I didnīt expect they were made over the shield.

Hi I am new here , and new to coin collecting ( only 5 years ). My main interest are Austrian/ Habsburg 1500 - 1938 coins and have about 280 of them mostly minors. I looked at my 20 kreusers ( I have 13 coins of that denomination ) and did not find Such marks on any of those coins.

Hi gadg, Austrian coins are also my main goal. Quote: I looked at my 20 kreusers ( I have 13 coins of that denomination ) and did not find Such marks on any of those coins. Lucky you! I want to upgrade two 20 kreuzer of Francis II because I donīt like the scratches, and the only thing I find are pieces with deeper lines over the shield.
