Here's a few creatures in my collection. I am not rich. I cannot afford coins that cost thousands of dollars, ancient or modern. It's still been an enjoyable hobby buying the lower end of the market. 1. Cales, Campania, Apollo/man headed bull, 20mm, 6.75 grams 2. Chios, Shinx/amphora, 31mm, 9.5 grams 3. Neaoplis, Macedon, AR hemidrachm, Macedon, Gorgon/Nymph, 13mm, 1.6 grams 4. Nicomedia, Bithynia, Dionysos/centaur, 21mm, 6.17 grams 5. Syracuse, Sicily, Athena/Hippocamp, 18mm, 6.01 grams 6. Corinth, AR stater, Pegasus/Athena, 20mm, 7.68 grams 7. Crete, Knossos, Europa on bull/labyinth lair of the Minotaur, 21mm, 5.34 grams.

Outstanding set of coins. The centaur on the Bithynia AE (Prusias II?) is especially impressive.
Thanks for sharing.

I don't have any ancients yet, but if one collects medievals you inevitably pick up some basilisks (Milan), griffons (Pomerania) and Dragons (Mansfeld, Ferrara and other places with St. George as their patron)

I agree that you got some great coins here. My fave is the Hemidrachm with Medusa's face.

There's nothing wrong with not spending big money on your coins. Especially when you have perfectly good examples of the creatures. I agree, Mythical Creatures is a great idea for a collection. I can only muster a tiny Pegasus... Cartheginian Sicily, 330-320BC Bronze, 15mm, 2.5g. Palm tree. Pegasus flying left (CNS III, 16).

I hope this doesn't spoil the ancient mood by going a millenium and a half forward, but here is another griffon, on a 1501 Duchy of Pomerania coin. The griffon was the symbol of the ruling medieval dynasty here, and showed up on their coins at least as early as the late 13th century.

Since this is turning into a griffon thread - with lovely contributions from everyone! - I don't want to keep my ancient griffon(-like) coin away from you: Gaul, Carnutes or Eburovices tribe, 40-30 BC? Bronze, 2.98 g, 15.5 mm. While catalogs do describe this coin as showing a griffon, it is really a hybrid between a griffon (which has the body of a lion) and a winged pegasus horse. But I like it anyway.

I really like the Apollo/man headed bull and the Dionysos/centaur coins. I also enjoy the animal themed coins, mythical or otherwise, and buy at the budget end of the hobby too. Though my coins may not be in the best of condition the history behind them is exactly the same, and the research can be very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
