I found this 1998 Lincoln Cent the other day. The date font looked a bit off. Anyone on here know where I can look up font errors, or have any idea of what took place with this cent? Thanks....all input is appreciated. Close up of date added to main topic. Sorry its from my scope. It is the only way for me to get the detail of the date.

Sorry it took so long. Was finally able to upload a pic from my scope....I know....not the best. But I cannot get a descent shot of the date with my phone. It looks like the last 9 and 8 are different....

As far as I know, the U.S. Mint does not use different "Fonts" on a coin of the SAME year, mint and denomination. Different coin denominations do have different fonts however. I suppose different mint mark styles could be termed different fonts. Any odd, weird looking or missing letters, numbers, etc... (called devices) on a coin can be the result of numerous different factors whether created at the mint, or caused by damage ( PMD) once leaving the mint. The Numismatic Glossary link on the upper left side of the page is a great place to learn from and review certain terms, errors, etc. Hope this helps.

There can be year varieties. Of font differences. Type one / two examples. Type A,B or C. But most of these listings will be in the Red Book listings. But polished examples won't be listed. Just compare with other examples of coins or images of the same years, to see if something is normal, or not. (Look up with coins of the same years.) sometimes font sizes change and not using the correct years of coin, will give you a wrong answer, but really is normal. I.E. : 2001-2003 cent obverses are larger than other years. So not checking to the correct year, could give you are wrong answer. So don't assume they stay the same size.

coop's comment made me realize, and remember, that there actually ARE just a few years in the Lincoln Cents series in which the U.S. Mint did change the DATE font styles but on the SAME year coin of the SAME denomination but only on the numbers of the date. Four years come to mind which I'm strictly speaking of Lincoln Cents. Those years are 1960 and 1970 (small date/large date), 1974 (there were two different 4's used that year) and 1982 (a big transitional year for the Lincoln Cent, small date/large date as well as an alloy composition change). Those are what come to mind at the moment but I believe those are the only 4 Lincolns if I'm not mistaken.
