As previously posted, I'm lucky to have a coin shop fairly nearby (40 miles) where the owners are friendly, helpful and fair. If they don't have something in stock, they try and get it for me.

I just spent $100 there yesterday, and was very happy with what I bought.

In terms of sheer number of coins, by far the largest contributor to my collection (fully one-seventh of my collection) is the local coin auction house - I used to buy up quite a few bulk lots of coins. I've also bought quite a few items from the tender sales at my local coin club over the years, again occasionally the bulk items, mainly "junk" but it pads out the numbers.

For the quality coins, most of them I still get from local dealers. I only resort to ebay for the things the local dealers can't or won't stock.

There are no coin shops or shows not even clubs around here So I'm restricted to ebay, a pawn shop with a very small selection and a couple flea markets. Not much for choices but I consider myself lucky to have those few places around. since there are not many collectors nearby.

I used to get most of my coins from ebay but that was a long time ago. I don't shop there much at all any more. Only if all other avenues have been exhausted.

Most often, I get my coins from a select few internet dealers or from other collectors selling stuff on forums.

But, we have a few large and small shows that come near me so I try to buy as much as I can from those. That is my preferred method.

I have two local dealers but I have rarely bought anything from them in their stores. They are ok but they often don't have the stuff I am looking for. I have bought from them at the local shows from time to time.

Coin shop (for general coins), two coin stalls in two different antique centres (for ancient material), mail order catalogues and internet dealers for most other material or for the material of highest quality. Coin shows feature twice a year.

I don't use auctions or ebay for coins. First because I can't stop myself bidding stupid amounts and secondly most of the stuff on ebay from my era of interest are culls or over-rated junk (which in essence amounts to the same thing).

I voted for other... 98% of the coins I have came from local collectors. I normally do not buy much at auction houses because mostly everything in there is junk. Cleaned or Very Poor, ex-jewelry gold, all that fun stuff.
I have not been to a good auction house yet.

I get the majority of my coins through internet contacts I have made on ebay. This year I have picked up 5 collections that way - most I will sell off but the counterfeits are mine.

Most of my coins are purchased thru ebay using dealers I know or if I use a new one they must have a good reputation.

Next I use my local coin shop (who is also a member of the local coin club).

Being from West Virginia it was difficult starting out collecting..as most avenues of collecting that are available to others in states with larger populations were not available.......the closest full service shop to my location then was 2 hours away........that was what got me to thinking and as I shared with other collectors in my area thru a coin club that we tried to organize, we found one member who went our local church that was a crazy about coins as we were.....and thru a concerted effort an idea was born and we now have a full service coin shop that has one super selection of all coins and grades.... even keys and is located within ten minutes from my house!!!! YEAY!!!!!!.......I dont buy exclusively from there....but I do spend alot of coins bucks there in an effort to support the venture.....the shop is doing really well and the manager is a close friend....he has even helped me start my own fledgling coin venture which is also doing well and now I can help others in obtaining both the knowledge of collecting and the coins themselves....it is Great!!!
