I was in today to the post office to ask about xpress post . You can purchase up to $5000 ins per package but then they pulled out an exemptions document from 2017 and I took this picture of it . Restricting coins to max coverage of $500. I called CP as I could find nothing online re coverage and they assured me $5000 would include coins but could not provide a document to me to confirm . Thoughts? Fedex is crazy expensive to ship to Toronto from here about 270 kms , over $400 one way. Thoughts? Do I have to take them there ?  |

$500 is indeed the maximum for coins.
Now you are learning about the costs and risks of certification, and selling coins in general.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

simple question:
how does CP interpret " collectible" items?
some country's PO's do accept collectibles.
example: shipping out of (or within) Germany it is no problem to get insurance for a lot more coverage..
however, you may not declare these items as coins or similar and must ship a certain way and not on a Monday to Thursday etc.... and, if there is an issue, they will investigate and get police involved if needed. It's all my personal experience. I think it is time that collectors in CAN should all write to their MPS.. it is free to send....

If using express post request a signature on the other end, that way your package is tracked every step of the way to destination. I have never had a problem with this postage in Canada or the USA package always arrives on time. The only thing is you can't mention coins are in package.

I want to ship some coins (about $40 worth) to Germany
With tracking and duties CP has told me it will cost just under $50
Is this typical?

You can get 3rd party insurance for pretty cheap. I can't remember the name off top of my head, but sold some gold coins, sent via Canada Post with signature, was very reasonable.

I have never had a single Fed Ex mailing go astray in 20+ years of sending stuff. This includes many uninsured valuable shipments using Fed Ex cross border to PCGS.
If you are shipping to ICCS for grading I would have no worries about an uninsured shipment for the usual Fed Ex price probably around $75.
You just want to ensure that you ask for a signature for either Fed Ex or Canada Post so they do not leave it on a doorstep.
DBM...I am shocked you can get a tracked package to Germany for as little as $50!!

The same way everyone else in the world does .
As defined by the Harmonized Tariff Codes for Customs .
Every different product under the sun has a different number .

I contacted my Insurance agent about the coverage of collection . I can increase a floater policy to the amount I want . In my case I am choosing $8000 in coverage which covers coins or bills while temporarily away from the home (shipping for appraisal and transport in car . The coverage cost is about $50 Cad for the year . Great solution to shipping and having coverage at home annually .

Ask us after our 70 K hit in 2018 .
Insurance companies will use every trick in the book to deny coverage .

so, what is stopping you from shipping your $ 40 worth of coins to Europe? About Euro 30? right?
No customs agent there would care unless YOUR shipper address is on some kind of "watch" list".
I am not sure what the underlying reason is for your question?
you might wish to re-ask your question in another, more realistic way.
IMO, Anyone who insists on insurance for a $ 40 value to anywhere in the world is not worth doing business with. If you do, that is your issue.
I believe your postal clerk was just answering your question in the same mind frame and gest that it was asked.... if it was ever asked.
Anyone knows that import duties and taxes are the destination countries, specifically the import customs agent issues who checks your shipment and are NOT up to Canada Post to decide.

Wow 70 K loss on a shipment ? That's brutal . What excuse did they use if you don't mind me asking .
