i have a 1981 p quarter and it appears to be doubling on most of the reverse is it worth anything

this is a great place to learn much from knowledgeable folk! As to your quarter, this is classic Machine Doubling, and adds no value. Others should chime in later .

thanks for the info but how can you tell the difference because I have seen similar pics that were doubled die

You have MD as stated and damage from probably a coin roller. The easiest way to tell the difference is the size of the devices, if they are not larger, counting what you see as doubling, then more than likely its MD, you can see how it cuts into it's normal size.
