Virtually everyone wrote letters in those days. And postage on a 1/2-ounce letter cost 3c. Until it didn't.

In 1883, the Post Office reduced the cost of a letter to Two Cents. Even before that, the idea of a three-cent piece, objectively speaking, was kinda stupid.

I do like the coins, though, especially the nickel ones. How would you grade this one?

If you paid for a stamp with a nickel, you'd get one of these in change instead of 3 1-cent coins. It could have made sense if there were other common items costing 2 or 3 cents.
