I don't want to damage the box, that's why I'm after a way to open it safely. The forum has given me more ideas to try.
The threepennybits are Elizabeth II, I can see that through the slot but what else is in there is a ?

Just a thought. You could buy one of those lock picking kits from ebay and do it yourself.

If you were close I would help you. I got rather adept at picking after locking keys in things more often than I like to admit.

As said above, there are many tutorials on YouTube. You may even find success using a pair of appropriately re-shaped paper clips.
