I'm trying to determine if these coins are fakes. I paid 60 for the Cap and Rays and 100 for the Peruvian coin. Victim or victor? Thanks everyone and Happy Holidays.

Anna14459 The 1874 Go 8 Reales looks genuine. In fact, it looks like you have the 4/3 variety. That is a common type. The edge looks good for that date and there are no other indications of anything being wrong. There is an odd graffiti under the eagle's wing. Make sure it is not a punch mark which would indicate it is a Chop which is far better than test cuts or scratches.

The Peruvian 8R looks good as well. The odd effect of cross hatching is I presume a photographic effect. The coinage of Lima, Peru has far poorer looking edge details than Mexico City, however, I would still confirm that the coin has two overlaps in the edge design exactly opposite one another and that the two overlaps are the same length.

You should also check the weight of each coin. The standard weight is roughly 27 grams. In this case wear would not remove over 1/4 gram tops. You should also check the density - the correct density of either is 10.31 g/ccm.

Thanks Robert. I was waiting for you to chime in. I'd like to get a copy of your book from you directly. How is that done? Thanks so much, you're one of the good ones, Pete.

Hello Pete - They are available, but postage is very costly to Canada from the US. You can order one printed in Canada directly from Amazon and save that cost. I can mail a copy postpaid in the US for the same price as Amazon $39. So unless you have a US mail address, I would need to check postage costs.
