Opened a roll of the new Nevada State Quarters and out of the whold roll of quarters there was one that really stood out among the others.

This one has it's normal outer layer of copper/nickel and the pure copper core as all the new quarters have today. The only difference in this one and the rest was it's color. This coin was a real nice slate gray. Almost what is called gun metal finish. Other than the color, the coin has no other features that are any different than the other 39 coins that came in the roll.

Any ideas what could have caused this shade of coloring?

I recall finding a similar colored Statehood Quarter. Can't remember the state, and I returned it to circulation -- which probably wasn't too smart on my part.

Maybe the planchets are missing a finishing process before being struck

This is the most logical answer and probably exactly what happened. It's rather a nice finish, as there is a shine, but still a gray silver appearance about the entire coin. Like I said, the outer layers of material are all there. It's just so shocking when it is found within a roll of brigh silver coins.
Then again, maybe CoinNut could be right!

Heeeehehehehehe.
Grey? Nevada?

Oddity

What about a planchet that missed the wash after it was annealed? It might make it bit darker?

I'll say one thing for it and that is, your coin sure has the same grayness, but without the shine that is on this one. But I'm also sure you'r right when you say its got to be something done, or not done, during the finishing state of the process. Missed a wash somewhere!
