Good morning all , ive been searching results of as janus coins and I find that they greatly vary in weight , can anyone explain why . thanks . this one is mine.

I don't know anything about Janus asses (that doesn't sound good!), but coin weights were reduced several times - because the metal composition changed, and to keep them in line with other denominations. The as in particular changed from 10 to the denarius to 16 to the denarius in 140BC to pay for the Punic Wars.

I also find Roman bronze coins can vary by a gram or so, even for the same issue, presumably because they weren't so worried about bronze.

interesting I hadnt considered the change because of the punic
war
