Official the government adopted the metric system in 1866 but never made it official for the country. In 1873 the weights of the silver coins were adjusted to make their weights more evenly expressed in grams. Up to that point the weights were given in grains and mostly in even grains which made their gram weight come out as a string of decimal places.

...and the 5 cent nickel, also introduced in 1866, was exactly 5 grams from the start (and remains exactly 5 grams to this day). I wonder if that was an early attempt at metricization.
